WWE News: Suspended UFC Star Chael Sonnen Told By WWE They’d Be Interested In Signing Him If TNA Was

In what may be the weirdest report in some time, it seems that suspended former UFC Fighter Chael Sonnen might be at the center of a weird issues between TNA and WWE currently. Sadly, he did nothing to deserve it. Chael spoke to WWE Superstar Chris Jericho on his podcast, “Talk is Jericho”and spoke about an interesting phone call he got from WWE.

The former UFC star told Jericho that WWE called him out of the blue and it came at an interesting time. Chael told Jericho:

“I got a call about two days before I was suspended. A WWE exec calls me up, and he said, ‘We read what you’re going through, we’re not interested.’ So I’m thinking, ‘why did you call me?’ He said ‘If you were 24 years old, you’d be making a whole jackpot full of money… but we think TNA is going to be calling you and if they do, we want back in the game.’ So I was like, OK, now at least I get we’re you’re coming from.”

While Chael has been known to spin some things in the past, he has never really been known as a liar. In fact, Sonnen has been known to be too truthful than anything else. He is entertaining, so a lot of wrestling companies could have fun using him. The weird part is that Sonnen is in the middle of a random battle between WWE and TNA when it doesn’t make sense for him to be.

While Sonnen is suspended for around 2 years by the Nevada Athletic Commission that makes all the rules for MMA currently in America, Chael can, in fact, do other things. Once he was let go by UFC, he was immediately removed by FOX from all shows they were doing with MMA material. Hilariously, they could have easily signed him to a talent deal for two years to keep him on to talk and that would not have violated any rules. The guys at FOX clearly didn’t want to do that.

Chael easily could work for a place like ESPN and talk MMA there, but he really wants to stay active so it’s doubtful he would want to be in a studio instead of in a gym.

He has permission to participate in MMA outside of the United States and inside the States he can fight in BJJ or other martial arts as it is a completely different sport. Obviously as well, wrestling is open for him.

What hurts Sonnen with WWE is his age, as WWE doesn’t like to take chances on people in an older age bracket. They like to bring in stars they can brand and make a lot of money on. Being 37, the time a lot of pro-wrestlers and fighters start to begin hanging up the boots, Sonnen is in a weird position. He won’t be able to fight in a MMA match-up in the United States until nearly 40 years old. So if Dana White wants to bring him back to the UFC then, maybe he’ll be able to fight but most feel it won’t be the same.

The fact WWE called him up before he was even suspended is interesting. Obviously they heard TNA had interest, so they wanted to tell him that they’d be willing to try to bring him in if TNA wanted him. The reason most think it’s dumb is because TNA could be going out of business soon and could be losing some of their biggest stars in 2015 including people such as Kurt Angle.

That being said, WWE shouldn’t care what TNA does. The fact the even called Sonnen up just to tell him something like this proves that WWE clearly does consider Sonnen a draw. So at least Sonnen can take solace in that.
