‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 11 Lands Kate Burton And Geena Davis

Grey’s Anatomy fans take note — it’s going to be a bumpy season. TVLine broke the news this week of not one, but two hard-hitting guest appearances in Grey’s upcoming 11th season. Golden Globe winner Geena Davis just inked a deal to appear in a “major arc” on the next season of Grey’s. There’s been no hint about just who Davis will play in the upcoming season, but fan opinion varies from intern, to new surgeon, to another (older) long-lost sister of Meredith Grey. The idea isn’t as outlandish as it sounds. If Ellis Grey was willing to hide one love child, couldn’t she have been willing to hide another? However, given the age difference between star Ellen Pompeo and Geena Davis, it’s more likely that Davis will play a contemporary of the late Ellis Grey, if she has a relationship at all. Geena Davis and Kate Burton, who plays Ellis Grey, are only two years apart in age.

Kate Burton, from the hugely popular Shonda Rhimes show Scandal, is set to return to Grey’s Anatomy in a reprise of her role as Ellis Grey. Burton’s appearances will be limited to flashbacks.

The stars of Grey’s Anatomy returned to the set this week to begin work on Season 11. Stars Ellen Pompeo and Kevin McKidd took to Twitter to share the news with fans. McKidd’s excitement is understandable, as he is directing the Season 11 premiere episode. McKidd’s last episode in the director’s chair was Season 10’s 19th episode, “I’m Winning.”

While we don’t know much about the episode currently in production, we do know a little bit about what Grey’s Anatomy has in store for fans this coming season. Fans of Alex Karev can expect tension in his working life as he decides whether he wants the position on the board of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital left to him by Christina Yang. Fans of Meredith Grey can expect her to dominate the season as she struggles with the revelation that she has yet another sister she never knew (this makes the third, the first from her mother) and tensions in her marriage. Fans of Owen Hunt can expect him to slowly start to recover from the departure of Christina Yang last season.

Fans of Shonda Rhimes can expect drama filled Thursday nights. Grey’s Anatomy moves to 8/7c next season to make room for a new Shonda Rhimes show, How to Get Away with Murder. ABC is referring to the new Thursday night programming block as Shondaland Thursday.

Your favorite Grey’s Anatomy characters will be back in the operating room when Season 11 starts, September 25, at 8/7c.
