SDCC: Telltale’s ‘The Walking Dead’ Game Gets Third Season But Will Clem Return?

Telltale Games is keeping the game-side of The Walking Dead franchise for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and mobile devices chugging along. The developer and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirman announced at a San Diego Comic-Con 2014 panel Saturday that a third season will be coming.

The announcement was made during a San Diego Comic-Con panel for Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment, which publishes The Walking Dead comic series along with many others as part of Image Comics.

Details on where Telltale Games will take The Walking Dead: Season 3 hasn’t been announced yet. The fact that there is still one more episode left in Season 2 is likely a large reason for that, since they obviously don’t want to give away any potential spoilers for the finale, such as who may live or die.

The pre-teen Clementine is the current playable character in The Walking Dead: Season 2, after spending the first season serving as both a reason for Lee to have something to protect and keep his humanity, plus to tug at the heartstrings of players. She grew up in Season 2, and not always for the better, due to constantly being under threat by both zombies and other humans. We are seeing how constant death and betrayal can affect a little girl’s attitude towards life.

It would seem a given that Clementine would return for another season of The Walking Dead with the way the second season has developed so far. There’s maybe one other character that is likable enough that players will support them, but Telltale would still be taking a big risk, given how beloved Clem is by fans of the game.

Telltale Games currently has its schedule loaded with a slew of upcoming choice-and-consequence adventure titles. The Wolf Among Us, based on the Fables comics, just wrapped up its first season, and there’s still Episode 5 – No Going Back for The Walking Dead.

These will be followed later this year by Tales from the Borderlands, which takes place in 2K Games’ and Gearbox Software’s Borderlands universe. By the end of 2014, another title based on HBO’s Game of Thrones will also be released.

Based on this schedule and past history, The Walking Dead: Season 3 will likely not make an appearance until around the middle of 2015 or later. Season 1 and Season 2 will be coming to the PS4 and Xbox One later this year, so it’s a safe bet that the next season will as well.

What direction would you like Telltale to take with The Walking Dead next season?
