A couple found dead in a hotel room in New York are believed to have committed suicide together after a “run of bad luck.” According to The New York Daily News, Scott Jacobi, 37, and Theresa Mateo, 34, were found lying in each other’s arms after an apparent drug overdose. A relative of the couple said that Scott and Theresa had some serious misfortune over the years — and that they had a suicide pact. Mateo’s mother also shared some feelings about her daughter’s evident depression.
“Mateo’s distraught mother, Linda, was inconsolable Saturday. Dressed all in black, she told neighbors she can’t believe her ‘baby is gone.’ She also blamed her daughter’s depression on an ex-boyfriend who broke up with Mateo a few months before she started seeing Jacobi.”
The couple found dead in the Staten Island hotel had checked-in on Wednesday. They were found by a hotel employee on Friday just before 1 pm when they didn’t check out on time, according to The SpreadIt. No one could have been prepared for what happened next.
“After several unanswered knocks on the room’s door, the worker of Hilton Garden Inn got in to find the duo from Staten Island dead, in bed, fully clothed and cradling each other. Police officers were immediately called to the crime scene.”
Although the medical examiner has not yet released an official cause of death (autopsies are pending), there wasn’t any sign of violence in the hotel room. There weren’t any weapons found and no blood around the bodies, which suggested that the couple may have taken pills of some sort, perhaps chased by alcohol, and just went to sleep and didn’t wake up. It’s unknown if there was any sign of struggle on their faces, but it sounds like they died peacefully, just holding each other.
This story is certainly unique, and not something that you hear about regularly. Most news stories involving the death of couples usually involve one person killing the other and then themselves. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, a man in Spokane allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life earlier this month. The man shot his wife multiple times before turning the gun on himself. The man was identified as 37-year-old Christopher Henderson. His wife, Sheena, was 30 years old. The reason for the murder-suicide was not immediately known. However, Henderson’s co-workers had previously overheard him talking about killing his wife. It’s unknown why no one notified the police.
