‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Casting: Neil Patrick Harris Might Play A Carnival Character

If you thought that the cast of American Horror Story: Freak Show couldn’t get any better, then you were wrong — Neil Patrick Harris might be joining Ryan Murphy’s creepy carnival.

According to The Wrap, Harris expressed his admiration for American Horror Story during an interview on EW Radio. The actor was so excited about season 4’s freak show theme that he resorted to begging Ryan Murphy for a role on the show. Here’s what NPH said:

I wrote a letter to Ryan asking if I can be in it, even though I wasn’t even available to be in it. To do one that involves any kind of freak, circus nonsense is going to be so unsettling to watch. Can’t wait!

Neil Patrick Harris went on to say that he never heard back from the American Horror Story creator, but, as luck would have it, Murphy heard about Harris’ interview and tweeted an offer that the actor just can’t refuse.

Now the big question is this: What role does Ryan have in mind? American Horror Story: Freak Show has quite the cast, but few details have been released about the acts that will make up Jessica Lange’s troupe of “unusuals.” As The Inquisitr previously reported, Sarah Paulson will be playing conjoined twins, and Michael Chiklis will star as a strongman. The cast members playing unknown Freak Show acts include Kathy Bates, Angela Basset, Evan Peters, and Emma Roberts.

As Variety reports, Neil Patrick Harris is just coming off a successful Broadway run starring in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He dressed in drag to portray the transgender musician, so here’s a fun idea: perhaps he could play a half-man, half-woman act on American Horror Story: Freak Show. These old sideshow acts were either real hermaphrodites or faked freaks that were created by dressing one half of a person as a man and the other half as a woman.

Neil Patrick Harris is also a talented magician, so perhaps Ryan Murphy wants to see him perform a few real tricks on American Horror Story: Freak Show. Other casting possibilities include Lobster Boy (a real-life sideshow performer with claw-like hands), a “half man” with no legs, a man with three legs, or a “lion-faced man” covered with hair. He could also be a human pincushion who sticks swords through his body or a man with elastic skin. There are just so many fun possibilities.

With How I Met Your Mother off the air, there just isn’t enough NPH on TV these days. Would you like to see him get weird by joining American Horror Story: Freak Show, or are you too afraid that his character would murdered in a gruesome manner? (It can’t be any worse than seeing the Mother killed off.)
