Kate Mulgrew Talks About Her First Emmy Nomination

From Ryan’s Hope to Star Trek: Voyager to Orange is the New Black; after some 40 years in the TV business, Kate Mulgrew has finally gotten her first Emmy nomination. The nomination, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, is for her portrayal of Galina “Red” Reznikov, a feisty Russian matron, on Orange is the New Black.

Kate tells E! Online that she was on vacation at the beach in Virginia, writing her memoir, when she got the news.

“I’m down at the beach writing a book right now and my boyfriend is here with me, but since we both are working, we’re going to put [celebrating] off until tomorrow night then the sky’s the limit. No holds barred, it’s wild down here in Virginia, you know what I mean? We’ll have a great dinner, we’ll have fun.”

Kate Mulgrew got her start in acting with bit parts, eventually landing the role of Mary Ryan on Ryan’s Hope. Even though she was only on the show for two seasons, she remains a fan favorite, even scoring #38 on We Love Soaps list of greatest soap actresses. She moved on to roles in Mrs. Colombo, Cheers, and most famously, Star Trek: Voyager. After Voyager, Kate stuck mostly to bit parts, according to her IMDb credits page, before hitting it big with OITNB.

Kate tells The Huffington Post that playing Red allows her to explore a wide range of emotions as an actress.

“In the course of one day the emotional spectrum that we experience is exactly what these women take us through in any given episode. I think we’re grateful for that, I think we’re elevated by it, I think we’re moved by it.”

In addition to Kate Mulgrew’s nod, OITNB cleaned up nicely with several Emmy nominations, earning 12, including Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series (for Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper), and taking three of the six slots in the Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category: Uzo Adoba (Crazy Eyes), Natasha Lyonne (Nicky), and Laverne Cox (Sophia), according to E! Online.

Kate Mulgrew does not have a verified Twitter account, but the official OITNB Twitter feed tweeted this pic, congratulating her:
