A police officer in Nebbi’s Ndew sub-county was viciously attacked by an unruly tortoise while relaxing with a nice cup of tea. The visitor was not invited into his grass thatched hut and refused to leave when asked. So, the officer took matters into his own hands.
After a long day of training fellow police officers, Charles Onegiu just wanted to sit down and relax for a bit. However, the bizzarro world version of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle sneaked into the hut and decided to cause a little havoc.
Charles Onegiu recalled the events:
“I tried to scare it but the tortoise became very aggressive. I took a stick to chase it but it instead became more violent making me to make alarm. I immediately picked a plastic chair to hit it. It then got out of the hut and moved towards the latrine as people rushed to my rescue.”
Sadly, the story does not end well for the poor temperamental tortoise.
“When it came out, I reached for my gun and shot it dead. It was a very big white tortoise. As I talk now, I am still scared because it is the first time I have seen such an incident happen in my life or heard of one.”
As a police officer, Onegiu is trained to always be on the lookout for danger, even the unexpected type. Unfortunately, this was more unusual and unexpected than even he was prepared for.
“It was a wonderful morning for me after training the crime preventers for the sub-county on the basics of their jobs. Little did I know that a different chapter awaited me later at home.”
Traumatized by the event, Onegiu called upon his district police commander,Onesmus Mwesigwa, to report the incident:
“He consoled me and advised me to keep on duty. My father also came to talk and consoled me about the incident, but I’m still scared.”
Onesmus Mwesigwa responded to the call later:
“Yes, I got that report because Onegiu called me and narrated how the tortoise came to his house and tried to grab his legs. As, you know in the villages, there is a lot of superstitions where people think ‘somebody is after me’. But, we consulted with some elders and his colleagues.”
There have been a lot of strange animal stories in the news lately, and this is definitely one of the odder ones. The video below may help to explain why the turtle was aggressive. Knowledge of the cause may have prevented the shooting and saved the tortoises’ life.
