Do You Know How Cheese Is Made? Learn This ‘Cheesy Science’ In This Video By PBS

Youtube and science has a very worthwhile and amazing relationship. Besides all the insanely entertaining videos from channels like Epic Rap Battles of History and The Fine Bros., other channels, such as AsapSCIENCE and Kurzgesagt, have uploaded videos of a more fundamentally sound nature. Through AsapSCIENCE, we learned if we should eat insects and the seven myths about the brain that aren’t true. Through Kurzgesagt, we learned in summary what is happening in Iraq today.

But what if we combined science with another popular Youtube topic: food? That’s what the PBS Digital Studios channel “It’s Okay To Be Smart” did when they uploaded a video on the science of making cheese.

The video was uploaded on July 7, 2014 and has over 60,000 views. Youtube popularity is, at this moment, is now the seventeenth most popular video on the website. That is not bad for a video from a channel dedicated to science, right? Back on topic, our host, Joe Hanson, admits he is a big cheese freak. Probably not on the same level as Steve Urkel, the cheesy cheese jokes used throughout the video show that he is on a level that could be almost up there with the lovable nerd from Family Matters.

With the help of Kara Chadbourne from Antonelli’s Cheese Shop located in Austin, Texas, we learn the science (and some history) about the origins of cheese. A couple of facts that I didn’t know that perked my interest was the location’s origin (the Middle East) and that it was made by accident. The fact that cheese was made by accident is not a shock since almost every great food was made by accident including chocolate chip cookies, potato chips, and wheat flakes cereal.

In conclusion, if this video’s purpose was to appeal for curiosity’s sake, it achieved its goal… which is probably the goal of “It’s Okay To Be Smart” since Joe Hanson ends each video with the following line:

“Stay curious.”
