Roswell Man $43,000 Credit: Bank Gives Man Huge Credit In Error, He Spends It

A Roswell man was given a $43,000 credit by mistake. According to The Canada Journal, the man deposited $430 last year, but the bank credited him so much more, adding a couple of zeros to the end. Instead of coming forward about the mistake, the man stayed quiet — and spent all of the money. By the time the bank realized their error, the money was gone. However, the man was told that he must pay the money back — and, as you might have suspected, he isn’t being too cooperative.

According to the report:

“The bank has reached out to the man multiple times. Police say a bank official has spoken to him by phone, but the man has yet to pay back the money. Now the bank is taking legal action.”

The Roswell man’s $43,000 credit will eventually cost him — even if he avoids talking to the bank. According to eCanadaNow, the bank has two options: They can sue the man in civil court or the district attorney made decide to file criminal fraud charges against him.

While you might think a bank error is tempting, chances are they will be able to trace said error and need to rectify it. The man didn’t do anything wrong in this case until he spent that money… Money that was not his to spend. The fact that he isn’t owning up to what he did, and not being cooperative when it comes to paying back the $43,000, suggests that this case will need to be escalated.

If the Roswell man doesn’t credit the $43,000 back to the bank, he will likely find himself in a far more serious predicament. Having a criminal record and/or serving time behind bars probably isn’t worth the things that he spent the cash on. Surely there is a small possibility that the man believed the dollar amount in his account was real and that the bank wouldn’t make such an error, but, in reality, he’s probably wondering if he can get away with this — or, if he has a conscience, how he is going to return all of that money (hello, eBay!).

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, a British woman received $88,000 in a bank error — and she too spent the “free” cash. She was ordered to pay back the money — with interest — over a six-month period. If she didn’t pay the money back, she would face 20 months behind bars. She was also “punished” for spending money that wasn’t hers. She was ordered to do 12 months of community service and to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.
