1 Million Lotto Ticket: Two Men Sue After Throwing Out ‘Winning’ Lotto Ticket

A 1 million dollar lotto ticket was thrown in the trash by two men from New York who claim that the New Jersey lottery website posted incorrect information about the winning numbers. According to The Washington Post, Salvatore Cambria and Erik Onyango checked their tickets on March 23, 2013. The men claim the wrong numbers were posted online in error, but by the time that error was corrected, it was too late. The men had already thrown out the winning ticket — and they are now suing the New Jersey Lottery Commission.

According to the report:

“They also say they have proof that they were the buyers of the missing million-dollar ticket: According to their attorney, Cambria and Onyango claim they purchased three tickets at the same time, and that the winning ticket’s serial number falls right between their two losing tickets, which they still have.”

The 1 million lotto ticket may never be found, but if the lottery commission has any way to check if these two men are telling the truth, there is a chance that they could get their money. It seems as though this way a mistake on the lottery’s part — and that would mean that it’s worth checking into. While an attorney for Cambria and Onyang say that this is a “long shot,” it is still worth trying. $1 million is serious money. Attorney Edward Logan said:

“It’s not as if the lottery commission or the state of New Jersey or whoever would be losing money. There was a winning ticket that was sold and these people have proven that they’re the ones who bought it. I’d like to think that New Jersey wants to do the right thing. But you never know.”

The 1 million lotto ticket case will likely be resolved soon. The lottery commission has to make a decision on whether or not they can prove that the trashed ticket was indeed a million dollar winner. If there isn’t a way to prove that — or prove that the two men actually purchased the winning ticket — the lottery won’t award them any money.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, some people believe in the lottery “curse.” Apparently some lottery winners run into serious bad luck after collecting their winnings. Perhaps there will be a silver lining for Cambria and Onyang if they aren’t given their supposed winnings… Do you think the men should be awarded the money? Do you believe their story about the numbers being wrong on the New Jersey Lottery website (via Huffington Post).
