Prince Harry Visits Brazilian Orphans, Celebrates Queen’s Birthday, Attends World Cup 2014

Prince Harry was in Brazil on official business and he also found time for a little leisure as well. First, he was there with family to celebrate the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II at the Brazilian Consulate in Sao Paolo, Brazil. While he was there, the Prince took time to visit with local orphans. In an emotional speech given at his grandmother’s party, he said that the stories that the orphans had shared with him about how they’d lost their parents to drugs, gangs, and violence, “reduced him to tears”.

Prince Harry met some of the orphans at Acer – the Association for Support of Children at Risk to help underprivileged children in Diadema near Sao Paulo. In a direct quote provided by Mail Online, Harry shares more about his experience:

“Some of the children’s stories in Diadema have reduced me to tears, but the smiles on their faces show the positive impact their community is having on them and the success of Acer.”

He also commented that the experience reminded him of the loss of his own mom. After meeting with two little girls and their grandmother and hearing about how they’d lost their mother to drug abuse, Prince Harry felt compelled to empathize with their loss:

“There are two little girls – I’m quite emotional – just looking at them I wanted to talk about my own experiences. But there is no point because it is just so far removed.”

The Acer association was organized by Briton Jonathan Hannay, the son of diplomat Sir David Hannay in 1993 to help children at risk succeed.

Prince Harry will also tour Sao Paolo with the mayor, Fernando Haddad and members of the police department to see how the city is actively tackling the drug problem in Sao Paolo. Part of the initiative involves providing housing, food, and work for addicts who are turning their lives around.

The Prince has also taken some time to visit with TV personality Sabrina Sato, who was in attendance at Queen Elizabeth’s birthday. Sato spilled the beans on their conversation to Us Weekly:

“We really enjoyed chatting. I invited him to come to Carnival in February and he said he would come. I will show him how we party in Brazil!… He’s extremely handsome, and a real gentleman.”

The Prince will also take in the World Cup 2014 and before heading out to Chile for the duration of his trip.
