New ‘Doc Savage’ Movie Could Star Chris Hemsworth [Rumor]
Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Rush, The Avengers) could be tapped to play the lead character in a new version of Doc Savage. A daunting project, considering that previous attempts to bring the pulp magazine character to life have been massive failures.
The only time a Doc Savage movie made it to the big screen, was in 1975. Doc Savage: The Man Of Bronze was by all intents and purposes a disaster, as viewers and critics alike, slammed the film.
Chris Hemsworth has been an action star, but lately is expanding his career by reaching into more character based roles, such as when he played Formula 1 race car legend, James Hunt, in Ron Howard’s film Rush. But the hunky actor is best known for his role as Thor in several Marvel films including Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers and will reprise the role in the upcoming Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
The Doc Savage movie has been in the works for some time. In 2010, director Shane Black (Iron Man 3) was hired by Sony Pictures to helm the new film, produced by Neil Moritz, but not much has been happening since then.
According to Screenrant.com, a script for the Doc Savage film already exists, but no name had been attached to play the starring role, until news that Chris Hemsworth could be the one. Even though the rumor is that the delay in production is due to budget problems, Sony considers it a priority.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Black very much wants to move ahead with this project and is actively pursuing a lead for his film. In that spirit, Black and Hemsworth recently had a meeting to discuss a possible collaboration.
It is apparent that Chris Hemsworth is fit for the role of Doc Savage. The character is described like this:
“Doc Savage’s real name was Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, as revealed in The Polar Treasure, a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices.”
Doc Savage is a hero with a combination of physical strength, goodness, and intelligence. Of course Doc is also extremely good looking, which is no problem for one of the sexiest leading men in Hollywood. Black stated he’s looking for a very specific man:
“They kind of gotta be tall. He’s the perfect physical specimen and when people look at him, they’re overawed by the sort of symmetry and perfection that he exudes… We need someone big.”
