Kristen Wiig Is Directing A Comedy

Back in 2013, The Inquisitr reported that Kristen Wiig was considering making her directorial debut. Almost a half year later, Kristen is going for it. According to UPI, Wiig wants to reunite with Annie Mumolo to co-write and direct an original comedy film for Tri-Star Productions.

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo will also be starring in the film as best friends who “find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths.” Kristen and Annie previously worked together on the film Bridesmaids, which was a widely successful comedy hit released in 2011. The film earned Wiig and Mumolo a nomination for best original screenplay. Bridesmaids grossed over $288.4 million worldwide.

Apparently the pairing worked well enough to make Wiig want to try it again. “We’re very excited to be writing,” said a statement made by Wiig and Mumolo, according to The Hollywood Reporter.“We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”

“Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now, so we grabbed it,” joked TriStar chairman Tom Rothman. “Perhaps more to the point, these two supremely talented ladies are always ahead of the comedy curve, and as we at TriStar push for originality, we are lucky as hell to be in business with them. The chance to hopefully make Kristen’s first film as a director is the cherry on top.”

When Kristen Wiig was first considering moving behind the camera, she made the following statement to Moviefone:

“[Directing is] what I’d like to start focusing on later this year. Maybe something someone else has written. Maybe something I have written. I’m not sure. I’m starting to look at stuff now. But that’s been an ambition for a long time.”

Kristen Wiig recently appeared in a number of successful films, such as The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Anchorman 2, Hateship Loveship, Despicable Me, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. Wiig will also be starring in a number of other upcoming films, including Welcome to Me, Nasty Baby, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, and Loomis Fargo.

According to Maryville Daily Forum, Kristen Wiig also stretched her acting chops a bit in the recent film Girl Most Likely. Wiig usually performs lighthearted and silly characters for comedy films aside other former SNL cast members. Girl Most Likely features Kristen in a heavier role, playing a failed New York playwright who has her heart broken and fakes a suicide attempt.
