Tim McGraw On Drug Addiction: Faith Hill Gave Me A ‘Big Wake-Up Call’
Tim McGraw recently revealed that he didn’t realize he had a serious problem with drugs and alcohol until his wife gave him a “big wake-up call.”
The country music star has found his name in the headlines quite a bit in the past few weeks. In addition to opening up about his addiction issues, McGraw addressed rumors that he and Faith Hill were spiraling towards a divorce.
Instead of denying these reports or dancing around questions about his struggles with drugs and alcohol, Tim McGraw decided to discuss the situation with Men’s Health magazine. The singer revealed that, while he never used needles to get high, he didn’t have a problem finding ways to alter his consciousness.

McGraw told the publication:
“I partied too much. And did other things too much. Chemically. No needles or that kind of stuff, but… use your imagination. When your wife tells you it’s gone too far, that’s a big wake-up call. That, and realizing you’re gonna lose everything you have. Not monetarily, not career-wise, but family-wise.”
Taste of Country points out that Tim McGraw learned a few things from fellow country singer Keith Whitley, who passed away back in 1989 as a result of alcohol poisoning. Since McGraw didn’t want to end up as another country music casualty, he decided it was time to get his life back in order.
He told the magazine:
“Keith Whitley taught me how demons can overtake you if you let ’em. And I was headed down that path. You feel like you’re supposed to be ‘on’ all the time. Then you drink and get onstage, and all of a sudden you feel confident and powerful. It becomes a habit. Up until seven years ago, there were not a lot of shows that I didn’t have something in my system.”
McGraw credits his wife Faith Hill with helping him find his way to sobriety. Not only is she a fantastic wife and mother, Tim also believes she’s one of the best country artists in the business. The Inquisitr previously reported that McGraw had nothing but wonderful things to say about his wife during a recent episode of Oprah’s Master Class.
The country singer offered the following assessment of Faith’s abilities:
“You’d better have your s**t together when you sing, because she is going to flat bring it every time she opens her mouth. It’s so effortless. She walks out, it’s like Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, and Brigitte Bardot all rolled into one when she starts singing. It amazes me every night, every chance that I get to sing with her.”
