Coming out of the closet has never been easy and in case you are from an orthodox family, then it is a near impossible task. But recently a girl from a traditional Indian family informed her mother about her orientation and recorded the entire event on a hidden camera.
The resulting video is proof that though initially all Indians will most certainly react how the mother reacts, they will eventually come to terms with the reality and accept their child.
As a prank and a way to get her parents to stop nagging her to get married, Shiney, a girl barely out of her teenage years, decided to inform her mother that she preferred girls instead of boys. Anyone who watched the video about the boy who similarly pranked his father would instantly become wary and expect a trashing irrespective of the gender.
As is with a prank, Shiney sets-up a hidden video camera with a clear view of the sofa. She then calls her mom and asks her to sit down. Thereafter she sets to somber up the mood by repeatedly asking her mother to stay calm and not get angry. Her mother, unlike the Indian boy’s dad, quickly retorts with an interesting reply, “If you do something that is worthy of an angry reaction, I will get angry,” says the mother, reported ScoopWhoop .
After a healthy dose of hemming and hawing, Shiney informs her mother that she is a lesbian. At the beginning of the video Shiney make it clear that she’s straight and this video is just a prank. Upon receiving the news, it is met with shock and disbelieve initially, which is later followed by denial and later anger. Incidentally these are all signs displayed by every human while dealing with grief and loss.
Shiney even attempts to substantiate the fact that she’s a lesbian by mentioning a character that her mother is familiar with and one who wears masculine clothing (a stereotype lesbian). After all the preliminary stages of emotion have been traversed by the mother, a typical Indian statement-cum-question, surfaces, “What will everyone say?” To this Shiney answers the question with another question: “You (mother) are concerned about other people, but aren’t concerned about your own daughter?”
After this Shiney apparently immerses herself in sobs and cries for 10 minutes. But then something wonderful happens. The mother brings her a glass of water and accepts Shiney’s orientation and even volunteers to explain the same to Shiney’s father, a task unimaginable in a traditional Indian setting, reported Deccan Chronicle .
Though Shiney does explain to her mother that it was all a prank and the relived mother is besides herself with joy, this video does prove that not all Indians are hardcore traditional fanatics clinging to the male-female institution of marriage.
