Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Announced

Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege at this year’s E3 gaming convention.

According to IGN, Rainbow Six: Siege is currently in development by Ubisoft Montreal and will be released in 2015. This is a big announcement for fans of the Tom Clancy war-based games, especially since Rainbow Six: Patriots was announced in 2011 and never saw the light of day. Rainbow Six: Siege was announced about six years ago, and is finally making its way to home gaming systems.

The Smoking Section reported that much of the mechanics in the original Tom Clancy games are still here in Rainbow Six: Siege, including all the preparation before missions and floor plans to keep the game from being gun-blazing chaos. Strategy and planning are necessary to complete mission objectives and advance through the game–a staple of the Tom Clancy franchise.

The Siege multiplayer mode was also announced, which features a five-versus-five competition between a team of terrorists defending a base that the Rainbow Six team has to infiltrate. IGN claims that each multiplayer match will last about three minutes. Players who rescue hostages during the missions will receive bonus points, which will ensure the matches aren’t simply death matches. Pocket-Lint describes this feature of Rainbow Six: Siege as capture-the-flag taken to the next level.

Ubisoft demonstrated some of the multiplayer gameplay of the new Tom Clancy title at the E3 convention, showing off its incredible graphics and polished battle mechanics.

One new feature of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege that sets it apart from past Tom Clancy games is its destructible levels. The Ubisoft team incorporated a version of the Assassin’s Creed Anvil Next engine to allow for players to manipulate and damage components of the game’s surrounding environments. A special technology called Blast Tech allows the player to punch through walls, floors, windows, doors, and other surfaces with explosives, guns and other weaponry.

According to MarketWatch, creative director of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, Xavier Marquis, had this to say about the game:

“As fans of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and tactical shooters in general, we set out to create the game we always wanted to play within the counter-terrorism universe. We asked ourselves ‘how could we capture the incredible tension and unique tactics of these confrontations?’ We found the answer in the Siege gameplay and procedural destruction. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is the game that Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six fans have been waiting for, and first-person shooter players will be drawn to its unique gameplay.”
