The Fault In Our Stars Movie Almost Didn’t Get Made
The Fault In Our Stars film is already all the rage and it hasn’t even come out yet. Based on the bestselling novel by John Green, the movie is an emotional love story between two teenagers with cancer. But John Green recently explained in an interview after a screening of The Fault In Our Stars how the movie barely made it to the screen.
According to Bustle, based on the content of the novel, John Green never expected The Fault In Our Stars to be turned into a movie. Nor did he want the vision of the original The Fault In Our Stars novel to be ruined by a screen adaptation. In the interview, he shared his experience with producer Wyck Godfrey:
“About two weeks after [The Fault In Our Stars] book came out, my brother and I were [in Los Angeles] for a tour event and Wyck came backstage and said, ‘We’re going to make a movie where the girl has tubes in her nose in almost every frame of the movie, and where the lead romantic male is an amputee, and it’s going to be a movie about people but it will be a movie about people who aren’t defined by their disability. They are going to be complex, rich characters and we think we can make a really faithful adaptation of your book.'”
John Green has mentioned several times in his video vlogs on his YouTube channel The Vlogbrothers that he was shocked Hollywood would even be interested in making a movie like The Fault In Our Stars about disabled teenagers; and it’s just as surprising that John Green agreed to let Godfrey produce the film. But Green went onto explain how Godfrey won him over and got him to green-light The Fault In Our Stars as a movie. “They were just very convincing,” Green said. “And they went on to keep every promise, I mean insanely. Over-delivering. They gave me a much rich, more rewarding experience than I could have ever imagined.”
Bustle reported that Green was able to watch auditions, hang out on The Fault In Our Stars set, and even make videos from the filming locations, which can be seen in the video below.
John’s positive experience with The Fault In Our Stars film has led him to agree to let another one of his books get turned into a film: Paper Towns. USA Today reported that Fox 2000, the same company behind The Fault In Our Stars, has reached a deal to turn Paper Towns into a big screen production.
I’m also REALLY excited that I’ll be an executive producer on the Paper Towns movie. Now, if you don’t like something, you can blame me. ?
