Bipolar Disorder a ‘Daily Battle’ For Demi Lovato

Former Sonny With a Chance star Demi Lovato says that the issues she faces stemming from her bipolar disorder will be a ‘daily battle’ for the rest of her life.

Lovato checked into rehab amid much speculation last November, disappearing from the Disney scene for three months. She later disclosed the rehab stay was for anorexia, bulimia, self-harming and general treatment for bipolar disorder.

In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest, Lovato admitted that she still struggles with a desire to be “normal,” as well as body image issues:

“I wasn’t going to continue to be alive if I continued to treat my body the way was… It’s a daily journey and it’s definitely going to be a struggle that I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life. Sometimes I think, ‘Why couldn’t I have been normal?'”

Lovato continues:

“It’s going to be a daily battle and I’m not going to be perfect, but as long as I wake up in the morning and I eat my breakfast and I say, ‘Look, ‘I’m going to eat this meal for right now. I’m going to eat for the rest of the day, I’m not going to self harm, and I’m not doing to do anything self-destructive.’ If I can make it through the day, that’s all that matters.”

Lovato admits earlier treatment could have spared her a lot of pain:

“Just looking back, I was un-medicated for so many years and it led to so many problems, which eventually led to some of my biggest problems which were anorexia and bulimia and cutting.”
