Mommy Blogger Lacey Spears Accused Of Killing Her Son To Gain Attention

Mommy blogger Lacey Spears is accused of poisoning and killing her son for attention. Authorities said 5-year-old Garnett’s death was ruled a homicide; as his blood contained extremely high levels of sodium, authorities believe he was poisoned and eventually killed by his mother.

In 2009, Lacey created Facebook and Twitter accounts to chronicle her infant son’s struggle with illness. Within the first year of his life, Garnett was reportedly hospitalized 23 times. Although Lacey did not reveal the exact nature of her son’s illness, she made it clear that her son was chronically sick.

Lacey also explained that she was a single mother, as her husband died while Garnett was an infant. Throughout the next five years, Lacey provided weekly, and sometimes daily, updates about Garnett’s struggles. She noted that he suffered with seizures, ear infections, headaches, and other unexplained symptoms. In numerous updates, Lacey Spears expressed frustration. She explained that Garnett was often hospitalized for weeks, as doctors were unable to diagnose his mystery illness.

In July 2011 Spears created a blog, which she titled “Garnett’s Journey.” In her first post, she discusses Garnett’s questions about his absent father and his continued struggles with illness.

Through social media, mommy blogger Lacey Spears gained the sympathy and attention of hundreds of supporters. However, authorities now suspect Garnett was being poisoned by his own mother.

As reported by Huffington Post, Westchester County, New York, authorities eventually became suspicious of Garnett’s chronic illness. Unfortunately, it was too late. Five-year-old Garnett passed away on January 23 at Westchester Medical Center.

Authorities believe the mommy blogger routinely poisoned her son through his feeding tube. Although she has not been charged, police believe Lacey Spears killed her son to gain sympathy and attention.

As explained by Medicine Plus, Munchausen syndrome by proxy occurs when a parent intentionally poisons their child in an effort to gain attention. Research suggest that parents who resort to such desperate measures are suffering with mental illness. While her son was dying, Lacey reportedly asked a friend to dispose of bags, which contained Garnett’s nutritional supplements. Authorities managed to seize the bags, which tested positive for dangerously high levels of sodium.

Spears denies poisoning her son and attempting to hide the evidence. Although Spears has not been charged in Garnett’s death, a spokesman for the Weschester County District Attorney’s office said “a shoe will drop” within the next month.

Lacey Spears denies killing her son. According to her attorney, she is “completely devastated by the loss of her son and absolutely denies harming her son in any way.”
