Chicago Blackhawks vs St. Louis Blues. What looked like it was going to be a short series with an ignoble exit for the reigning Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks has suddenly turned into a horse race after two games in Chicago. The Blues vs Blackhawks series goes to game five at 8 Eastern/ 7 Central tonight, tied at two games apiece.

So far, the home team has won every game. The St. Louis Blues would love to see that trend continue tonight as they head back to Missouri. They would be OK with if if that trend continued throughout the whole series, allowing them to advance in seven games.

Unfortunately for the Blues, the NHL Playoffs seldom play out neatly like that. The Chicago Blackhawks have the momentum going into game five, having won the last two. An AP report quotes Chicago Blackhawks center Andrew Shaw going into game five:

“I think the odds are in our favor right now. The last two games have been huge for us. We had a good push, the push we needed.”

The Blues are still feeling the loss of center and captain David Backes, injured following a dirty hit that earned Chicago Blackhawks’ Brent Seabrook a three game suspension. Seabrook will rejoin the Hawks for game six of the Blackhawks vs Blues series. There’s still no word regarding when Backes will be able to hit the ice again. He didn’t skate during the team’s most recent practice. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock had this to say about it:

“He’s not skating today so read what you want from that. He’s not around, he’s not skating, so we’ll see tomorrow. Hopefully, he’s able to get back before Seabrook or by Seabrook’s time, so it doesn’t turn into a little bit of an advantage for Chicago.”

Look for game five to be just as gritty as the first four matches. As longtime Blues fan Kelly Presson put it, “Blues play better when (the game is) chippy.”

The St. Louis Blues joined the NHL in the original expansion in 1967 but have yet to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup. The Blackhawks – and Original Six team – are chasing their sixth Stanley Cup. For either team to have a chance to win the Cup, they’ll have to emerge victorious from what has now become a best two-putt-of-three Blues vs Blackhawks series.
