‘Skylanders Trap Team’ Announced By Activision [VIDEO]

Activision scored when they published Skylanders. Not only is Skylanders a popular game, but it makes parents fork over cash exponentially to fuel their children’s gaming collectives. This is because Skylanders isn’t just a game, but figurines too. Now Skylanders is introducing a new entry in the series known as Skylanders: Trap Team.

According to Forbes, Activition announced the next Skylanders installment on Wednesday. It does a one-eighty on the Skylanders‘s paradigm by allowing players to “trap” villains they defeat than save them into the figurines. Eric Hirshberg, the chief executive officer of Activision Publishing, clarified what this meant in a statement:

“For the last three years, we’ve allowed players to bring their toys to life inside a video game [Skylanders]. Now we’re letting them bring their video games to life in the real world.”

Skylanders is actually one of three current mega games by Activision, along with the Call of Duty Series and World of Warcraft Series. As reported by Engadget, the three games brought in 80 percent of Activision’s earnings in 2013. Skylanders is probably the biggest money-maker, out of the three, because of all the peripherals required. With each Skylanders installment, a new figurine reader – known as a “portal” – is needed. Add on that figurines range from $5 to $7 average, and the games range from $7 to $60, it is not hard to see why Skylanders is so profitable to Activision. Thankfully, critics have rated Skylanders to be decent too.

The only issue Skylanders might have is falling victim to the fate other mega titles Activision had. Prior to Skylanders, Activision were the forefront runners for extreme sports games, primarily Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. They also innovated the musical rhythm genre, starting with Guitar Hero. Both no longer exist because Activision saturated the market with too many sequels, without any real depth, in a short amount of time. Near their ends, the games became rush jobs for a risk of a quick dollar profit rather than the long-term investment of a quality game. The Call of Duty Series is on the brink of this downfall with their latest title, Call of Duty: Ghosts, by the possibility of losing their license, as reported here on the Inquisitr.

Right now, Skylanders is making plenty of cash for Activision and the next installment actually looks interesting. Let’s hope the next Skylanders installment lives up to the hype when it releases in the Fall on October 5th.
