Miley Cyrus felt she had to “murder” Hannah Montana in order to break free from the character and be herself.

It’s no secret that the Disney darling went sprinting away from the squeaky-clean character as soon as her days at the network were officially finished. Instead of hanging around and milking the franchise for all its worth, Cyrus wanted to pursue a career that would give her a bit more freedom.

According to CTV News , Dolly Parton explained that Miley Cyrus believed she needed to murder her Disney-oriented alter ego. People around the world may have thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Hannah Montana, but it was obvious to the country music legend that Cyrus was ready to leave those days behind .

“As a little girl she was great, but then she started to grow up. And people didn’t want her to grow up — they got mad at her. Well, that’s how everyone has been with Miley. One day she’d had enough and told me, ‘I need to murder Hannah Montana in order for people to accept who I really am,’” Parton told The Sun about Cyrus.

She continued, “I think she felt she had to make that severe a change. And she obviously did. I was very worried — I was holding my breath, hoping that people didn’t totally crucify her.”

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Parton wants her goddaughter to waste all of her time and energy causing controversy. Dolly worries that ditching Hannah Montana has allowed Miley Cyrus to focus entirely on developing risqué performances. The country legend is extremely concerned that Cyrus’ desire to bid farewell to Hannah Montana will ultimately overshadow her talent.

The Inquisitr previously reported that Miley Cyrus recently rocked an “R.I.P. Hannah Montana” shirt while meeting up with some of her fans. She previously said during her appearance on Saturday Night Live last year that the character was the victim of a murder. Although it seemed like a joke at the time, now it appears that Montana’s death was a long time coming.
