The Red Wings take the ice against the league-leading Boston Bruins in the opening round of the 2014 NHL Playoffs.

Red Wings vs Bruins. Bruins vs Red Wings. Look for this 2014 NHL Playoff battle of Original Six teams to be tighter than the regular season records would suggest. The Boston Bruins won the President’s Trophy and home ice advantage for as long as they last in the playoffs handily, but you can never discount the Red Wings – even when half of their roster started the year in Grand Rapids instead of Detroit. One thing is for certain. Injuries or no injuries, stockpile of young players that weren’t in the NHL when the season started or not, Bruins’ coach Claude Julien isn’t looking at the lower-seeded wildcard Red Wings as a gimme. A report on Yahoo! Sports quotes him saying: “I heard about 40 percent of the series are upsets in the first round. You have teams that have high expectations. You have teams that have nothing to lose and everything to gain. So that certainly makes that first round a challenge.” Indeed, when the Detroit Red Wings lost Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Todd Bertuzzi and other top-tier talent to long term injuries, many speculated that this could be the year that the Red Wings’ longstanding streak of playoff appearances could come to an end – including this earlier report in the Inquisitr. Clearly, the Red Wings made it, following a hot streak late in the year by a slew of players called up from Grand Rapids to fill in for injured Wings – led by scoring sensation Gustav Nyquist. Read about the Red Wings’ 23 year playoff appearance streak – the longest among all major North American sports – in this earlier article in the Inquisitr. As for the battered Red Wings, Datsyuk returned for the final week of the regular season and had an impact. He is expected to play. Wings’ captain Henrik Zetterberg is expected to miss at least the first two games of the Bruins vs Red Wings series, as reported by the Bleacher Report. Many consider the Bruins the favorites to win the Stanley Cup in 2014. With star power like Zdeno Chara, Loui Eriksson and Tyler Seguin, they could be more than the young (and still somewhat battered) Detroit team can handle in this Bruins vs Red Wings series. The goaltending edge for the Red Wings vs Bruins series is solidly in Boston’s favor. Tuukka Rask is considered by many to be the frontrunner for the Vezina Trophy and was indisputably one of the NHL’s best goalies in 2014. Detroit’s Jimmy Howard has struggled off and on throughout the year, though his part playoff experience suggests that he can rise to the occasion when needed.
