Patton Oswalt To Guest Star On ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Nerds and comic book geeks are rejoicing at the announcement of Patton Oswalt guest starring on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Patton will be joining the cast as Agent Eric Koenig in an upcoming episode.

According to an article on Marvel.com, Patton Oswalt received a phone call from his agent about the upcoming role, in which Patton responded enthusiastically. Patton even stated, on the website, his feelings toward the upcoming role:

I got a call from my agent saying they want you on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I said ‘hell, yes!’. I’m lucky that I’m visible enough that they wanted to bring me in to play this character. I’d worked with [Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Executive Producer] Joss [Whedon] before on Dollhouse, and I guess I wasn’t too annoying and they decided to put me on another one of his shows. So I was very lucky.

Most who follow Marvel casually, or even very well, probably don’t know Agent Eric Koenig. Reported by the Examiner, Koenig appeared with Nick Fury in a group called “The Howling Commandos” in the World War II ear. Patton Oswalt, despite being a big comic book nerd, thought his character was connected to M.O.D.O.K. On this, Patton stated:

When they first told me the character’s name, I’ll admit the first thing I did is I went on Wikipedia and looked up the M.O.D.O.K. character to see if Koenig was maybe his name before he became M.O.D.O.K., but it wasn’t. They keep on talking about the Clairvoyant in the show and I’m like, ‘is that M.O.D.O.K.? Am I M.O.D.O.K.?

Patton Oswalt is an excellent choice to have in the show because of his position in comic book culture, best seen in Patton’s stand-ups. Patton even defended Ben Affleck for being the new actor for Batman, as reported here on The Inquisitr.

Patton Oswalt AOS

In conclusion, having an actor such as Patton Oswalt, associated with comic books, star in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a show based off of a comic book, is a smart move. Maybe it is Marvel’s way of competing with the inclusion – though it was just a cameo – of Harley Quinn in Arrow.
