Newell: Valve Is Interested in Wii U

Joystiq managed to catch up with Valve’s Gabe Newell after a Valve keynote, held earlier this morning, and asked what Valve had to say about Nintendo’s next console. And, would you know it, Newell had plenty of good things to say.

Wii U seems to be a lot more powerful than the previous generation,” Newell said. “It sort of fits better into the scalability in terms of graphics performance and CPU performance, so I think it’ll be a lot easier for us to fit it into our scalability model.”

As Newell pointed out later in the interview, Valve has been slowly making a push towards consoles, starting with Xbox 360 and, more recently, the PlayStation 3.

Newell’s opinion of the PlayStation 3 wasn’t always bright and sunny, however. Back in 2007, Newell publicly blasted the PlayStation 3, calling it a “total disaster on so many levels.” His opinion has since changed pretty dramatically, with Portal 2 making it over to the PlayStation 3 with the added (and exclusive, at least on consoles) benefit of the Steam cloud services.

If there’s any developer high atop my personal Wii U-developer wish list, it would have to be Valve. Mark me down as interested, Newell.
