Johnny Manziel Signs Multiple Year Endorsement With Nike

It appears as if someone is all in on Johnny Manziel. The former Texas A&M Quarterback has been getting rave reviews for his college work while some scouts are not high on his pro chances. Meanwhile some such as Mel Kiper think he is worthy of a top five spot in the NFL Draft, if not the first overall pick. Regardless, it seems Nike is all in no matter what team he is signed to.

Nike didn’t care where Johnny Football landed. It was all a matter of where and when they could get the deal done. Financial terms were not let out, as Nike and Johnny have the right to keep that private. What is known however is that it’s the highest rookie contract in this year’s class, signed for multiple years.

The problem with the signing is that, although it’s speculated for Manziel to go high in the NFL Draft this Spring, it does not mean he will be a good NFL player. While speculation could grow on how well he played in college and how he could possibly do that in the NFL, it is not a guarantee. There is no way he could get away with some of the stuff we saw him do in college, so it will be fun to see how he transitions.

Most of the time, it seems obvious that a former Heisman Trophy winner will transition well into the league. I mean, they are the best that the nation had to offer in college, so naturally they will be the best to draft. Sadly, the reality shows that out of the last 10 Heisman winners, all have gone to the NFL. Sadly very few of them lived up to the expectations they were given coming in.

Since 2004, at least two of the QBs that won do not start in the NFL or do not play for a team at all. Only 4 of the players start, 2 of them could potentially not be starters if they do not show more promise next year. So in reality, Manziel’s Heisman is worthless when you think of his transition to the NFL.

The one thing that hurts him is his size, he thought he would be measured at 6’0 even but instead he came in at 5’11. That is not a death-nail to his first round hopes, but it does hurt his stock over other QBs and at least one defensive end.

He may have signed with a popular brand, but that by no means makes him the best player coming out nor does it guarantee him a spot at the number one pick overall. Obviously will we have to see where Manziel goes, not only in the draft but in his career. If Nike signs another bad athlete, they will only continue to lose money.
