Snoop Dogg Wins Australian Visa Battle Despite Protests

Snoop Dogg has been granted an Australian work visa, even though a petition and protest had been organised to deny his entry.

The Collective Shout group organised the attempt to block Snoop’s access to the country, and they were even able to gain over 3,500 signatures. They aimed to have Snoop’s entry visa dismissed.

The women’s organization, which was led by feminist Talitha Stone, had hoped to deny his entry because of Snoop’s misogynistic lyrics.

They posted a letter on their website that was targeted at federal immigration minister, Scott Morrison. It read: “Snoop Dogg’s lyrics glorify violence against women. As a society which claims to be serious about eradicating violence against women.”

It continued, “There should be no place for recording artists who glorify misogyny and degrade women for entertainment. Welcoming artists like Snoop Dogg sends a message that we don’t take our obligations to address violence against women seriously.”

Snoop was traveling to Australia in order to play at the touring Big Day Out festival, where he is billed as the No.3 headliner.

According to Morrison the rapper and reggae artist has been granted his visa, even though Morrison received the message, which possessed the headline, “Revoke pimp rapper Snoop Dogg’s visa.”

Last year, The Collective Shout also started a campaign to stop Tyler, the Creator from entering Australia. They claimed that his behaviour was “creating a hostile environment for women and girls by engaging in vilification.”

Tyler allegedly unleashed an expletive ridden attack at Stone during a live show too, which they then used to try and have his visa revoked. They even sent a letter to Brendan O’Connor, the federal immigration minister, which was called, “Has Tyler the Creator breached his Visa conditions?”

Snoop, who also goes by the name of Snoop Lion and Snoopzilla, has had trouble gaining a visa to several other countries in the past.

In 2007 he had to cancel the U.K. leg of a European tour because the British government denied his visa. This was because Snoop had been banned from entering the country after he and his entourage got involved in an argument that turned into a fracas with Heathrow Airport’s staff and police.

Snoop is also currently banned from Norway for two years after he was caught with eight grams of marijuana in June 2012. In October 2011 he was also held up when he arrived in Oslo because, according to his version of events on Twitter, he had “2much money.”
