Robin Roberts publicly revealed today that she is in a same-sex relationship with a woman named Amber.
The Good Morning Americ a co-anchor made the disclosure on Facebook.
In June 2012, Roberts was diagnosed with a rare blood disease called myelodysplastic syndrome. She took a leave of absence from the show as a result of the illness. In September 2012, Roberts underwent a bone marrow transplant to treat her disease.
In the Facebook posting that included a picture of her dog KJ, Robin Roberts wished her fans a happy new year and explained in part:
“Flashback 12/29/12….Hard to believe this was 1 year ago today..when I reached a critical milestone of 100 days post transplant…and KJ was finally allowed to come back home… At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude. I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann, for being my donor and giving me the gift of life. I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together…”
Roberts also thanked her followers for praying for her recovery and encouraged Facebook readers to also reflect on what they are grateful for as the year comes to a close.
People magazine offered more information on Robin Roberts’ long-time girlfriend who is identifed as Amber Laign.”Laign, a San Francisco Bay-area native, is a licensed massage therapist and has a private practice specializing in patients recovering from injuries. They have been together for 10 years after meeting through mutual friends.”
According to The Wrap , insiders have been aware for a while that Robin Roberts is gay. “Roberts’ sexuality had been known to her family, friends and co-workers for some time, but her mention of longtime girl friend Amber Laign was her first public acknowledgement.”
Robin Roberts returned to Good Morning America on a full-time basis this past September.
