Dwyane Wade Enlisted Sons, Nephew To Propose To Gabrielle Union
Dwyane Wade enlisted the help of his two sons and his nephew to propose to fiancée Gabrielle Union.
Wade’s youngest son, Zion, held up a sign with Union’s name. His nephew, Dahveon Morris, held a sign saying, “Will you,” and his oldest son, Zaire, held up a sign reading, “marry us?”
The 41-year-old Being Mary Jane star turned around to find Wade on bended knee, holding up an 8 1/2-carat cushion cut diamond engagement ring.
“I planned it,” the Miami Heat guard said. “No concrete for my knee. I planned it very well.”
The 31-year said no date has been set for the wedding, but he expects it to take place in September 2014. Dwyane Wade also said he had been shopping for the perfect ring since October, around the time the Heat returned from training camp in the Bahamas.
Wade said he met with his jeweler several times several times over the past three months to make sure everything was just right.
“I kind of know my lady,” he said of Gabrielle Union. “I know she’s simple, but at the same time, I just wanted the rock to kind of speak for itself and not do too much with the diamonds. I think it’s a simple ring, but it’s nice. It was nicely done … it’s timeless.”
Wade also said that he asked Union to marry him and the three boys he is raising.
“We’re a package deal, so it was cool,” he said.
This will be the second marriage for both Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union. Wade married high school girlfriend Siohvaughn Funches in 2002. He filed for a divorce in 2007, which was granted in 2010. Wade was granted sole custody of Zion and Zaire in 2011, and the former couple reached a $5 million divorce settlement in July.
Union married retired Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Howard in 2001. The couple separated in October 2005, and their divorce was finalized in 2006.
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade announced their engagement Saturday on Instagram.
Union posted a picture of her ring on her account with the caption, “Sooooo this happened… #Yessss @dwyanewade.” Wade posted the same photo on his account with the caption, “She said YES!!! @gabunion.”
