Tom Hanks ‘Not Interested’ In Playing A Bad Guy

Tom Hanks has admitted that he isn’t interested in playing a bad guy on the big screen.

Hanks is widely regarded as one of the nicest actors in Hollywood history. His performances in the likes of Forrest Gump, Big and as Woody the Cowboy in Toy Story 1, 2 and 3 have helped to cement this position.

Hanks told Total Film, “Look, playing bad, I am not interested, ever. I don’t want to see bad guys who are just bad, you know? Why are they bad?”

He then explained, “There are evil villains out there like, I don’t know, Iago, that are intriguing to play. But bad guys do not look bad – they look like you or me. You could have a knife in your shoe, you know?”

Hanks also discussed the key component to his affability, noting that he despises liars. “There’s no substitute for absolute, complete honesty,” he remarked, “There are people out there that lie very easily. I refuse to accept that. If you lie to me, you’re going to be in big trouble.”

Hanks can currently be seen in Saving Mr Banks, alongside Emma Thompson, which depicts the origins of Disney’s 1964 classic, Mary Poppins. He has also been discussing how Disney was an important part of his childhood too.

Hanks explained to NPR:

Well at the time that it really mattered, it was [the Sunday night television show] Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.

And we did not have a color television set until much later than everybody else did, and so I remember where I was. My parents had taken me to some friends of theirs, and I was relegated to the downstairs rec room.

And I had at my disposal, on a Sunday night, a color television, and saw for the first time Tinkerbell come out and go “dink, dink, dink” with those fireworks. And it was blue and red — I thought it was magical. I could not believe.

And then what kicked in? A song by Richard and Robert Sherman: [sings] “The world is a carousel of color, wonderful, wonderful color.” And so it was a staple of Sunday nights. It was magical to sit and watch Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.

Hanks has had quite a prolific 2013. Alongside his portrayals of Captain Richard Phillips and Walt Disney in Captain Phillips and Saving Mr Banks respectively, he also reprised the beloved character of Woody in Toy Story of Terror, and each of the films have been lauded by critics and audiences alike.
