Saturday Night Live went to the unusual step of mocking President’s Obama recent trip to South Africa, which made more headlines for his “selfie” and the fake sign language interpreter than his speech.
NBC’s long-running late night show has been supportive of the President, although it has poked fun at the Obamacare woes.
Unfortunately for Mandela, Obama’s appearance at the memorial made more headlines due to unwanted attention to the “selfie,” and the discovery that the sign language “interpreter” seen during the footage of the event, was fake.
The SNL skit was spot on, when cast member Jay Pharoah opened the show addressing the events that occurred at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela.
The hilarious skit is just the latest in bad news for President Obama, who didn’t make headlines for his speech at the Mandela Memorial, but for deciding to be part of a “selfie” with the British and Danish Prime Ministers. Of course, a fake sign language interpreter didn’t help the situation.
Jay Pharoah as President Obama tried to explain his behavior at the Mandela memorial service:
“I felt like Lemony Snicket, because I experienced a series of unfortunate events. First, I got roped into taking a selfie with the blonde, female Danish Prime Minister. Some people told me Michelle was angry at me for that, but I talked to her afterwards and I can assure you… she was furious. Then I got caught shaking hands with Raul Castro. In my defense, he told me he was Edward James Olmos. And finally, there was a sign language interpreter who clearly had no idea what he was doing.”
As Obama (Pharoah) went on to talk about Healthcare.gov at the press conference, the fake sign language interpreter (Kenan Thompson) is seen in the background hilariously “signing” the speech, pretending to shoot webs and rubbing his nipples when Obama said “I’m just relieved the website has been turned on again.”
Even German Chancellor Angela Merkel showed up in the SNL skit, to demand a “selfie” with Obama, but he ordered the Secret Service to take her away. Watch a clip of the hilarious SNL skit below:
