Lady Gaga Shows Us She Gets The Joke With ‘SNL’ Shenanigans

No matter how much importance men give a woman’s sense of humor, there’s one lady in the entertainment world who knows how to laugh at herself. That lady is Lady Gaga.

Gaga joined the ranks of Justin Timberlake and other recording artists to do double duty on SNL, serving as both host and musical guest. Gaga’s first turn as host—having previously appeared in musical capacity twice—was called “the strongest episode of Saturday Night Live so far this season” by The Hollywood Reporter. While Entertainment Weekly points out that Lady Gaga’s album sales didn’t see a bump after the SNL appearance, the public image of everyone’s favorite Fame Monster surely got a boost with her display of self-deprecation.

Lady Gaga’s first rip at herself came in her monologue by way of satirizing her hit, “Applause,” in the newest Lady Gaga single: “Cheap Applause.” Gaga offered the song as a commentary on the ease of manipulating crowds by pandering to the lowest common demoninator.

The evening’s best bit saw Lady Gaga as a hapless Apple Store employee on “Waking Up With Kimye,” the morning talk show with everyone’s favorite power couple, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West (big surprise, Kanye is pissed). Gaga’s character is brought on the show to fix Kim’s laptop (she saw the Apple logo and dipped it in caramel). Before that could take place, Kanye berates the unsexily-dressed Apple Genius for calling herself a genius (“You do not deserve the title of genius! You cant just throw that term around! Mark Zuckerberg is a genius. I am a genius, I am a god. Kim is a genius!”) and for her lack of fashion. The pay off? Gaga’s best Saturday Night Live zinger: “I think people who try too hard with their outfits are maybe hiding something.”

In another wry grin at her expense, Lady Gaga appeared in the commercial for WHAAAT?: The Worst Cover Songs of All Time, which featured cast member Taran Killam as Counting Crows singer Adam Duritz. The mock compilation which included Counting Crows’ own version of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi,” has Gaga lampooning herself by appearing to cover a Madonna song, “Express Yourself” by singing the lyrics to her own hit “Born This Way.”

Lady Gaga showed the world that she not only gets the joke, she’s in on it.
