The Best Man Holiday came incredibly close to knocking Disney’s big-budget sequel Thor 2 out of the top spot at the box office this weekend.
Although The Dark World continued to earn loads of cash for Marvel, Malcolm D. Lee’s African-American comedy also made an impressive amount of money from moviegoers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Best Man Holiday generated an estimated $30.6 million in receipts this weekend. The movie only made $8 million less than Thor 2, a film that cost quite a bit of money to produce and market.
Even though the flick couldn’t dethrone The Dark World, the folks at Universal Pictures have already recouped the sequel’s production budget and then some. Lee’s comedy reportedly cost the studio $17 million to produce, which is a lot less than Disney splurged on Thor’s latest adventure.
The Best Man Holiday is the long-awaited sequel to Lee’s 1999 comedy The Best Man. Although it’s been years since the characters appeared together on the big screen, apparently audiences were more than ready for another story. The film stars Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Harold Perrineau.
Thor 2, meanwhile, has already surpassed the money earned by the original flick back in 2011. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie has amassed approximately $479 million during its theatrical run. Comparatively, Kenneth Branagh’s Thor topped out at $449 million globally.
Despite all of their success this weekend, both The Best Man Holiday and Thor: The Dark World don’t stand a chance against Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Analysts predict the sequel could make upwards of $185 million next weekend.
However, Malcolm D. Lee’s follow-up could give moviegoers an alternative to the big-budget flicks that are taking over theaters this holiday season. According to Cinema Blend, positive word of mouth on Twitter could help give this flick some legs at the box office.

I hope that The Best Man Holiday has good success. It's about time we had Black films that don't rely on the slave/servitude narrative.
