Shortly after announcing that Stevie Nicks would guest star on an upcoming episode of American Horror Story: Coven, co-creator Ryan Murphy has revealed that the Fleetwood Mac singer will play herself.
Murphy told Entertainment Weekly that Fiona (Jessica Lange) brings Nicks in as a way to get the next Supreme to reveal herself. As we found out in the third episode, “The Replacements,” when the new Supreme starts to come into her powers, the old Supreme starts to fade. Fiona killed Madison (Emma Roberts) because she thought she was the next Supreme after she revealed that she had the power of pyrokinesis. In the next episode, “Fearful Pranks Ensue,” Delia (Sarah Paulson) reveals that Madison was hiding a heart problem. Now Fiona wants to find out who the true Supreme is.
“So she tells Misty Day that the Supreme gets so many great things in life, like tickets to the Oscars and Met Ball tickets. So she brings Stevie Nicks in as a gift to Misty to prove to her that if she exhibits more power she’ll get that and more,” Murphy said. “Then the other girls come home and see Stevie and Misty singing and it starts them trying to move much quicker to prove that they are the Supreme.”
Ryan Murphy said Stevie Nicks will appear in the tenth episode of the season, when American Horror Story: Coven returns from its winter break. Nicks’ appearance almost didn’t happen, however, because she was touring with Fleetwood Mac in Europe. After John McVie’s cancer diagnosis, the group canceled their tour dates, and Nicks called Murphy and said she was “now available sadly enough.”
Murphy also said Lily Rabe, who plays Misty Day, was “freaking out” when she learned that Stevie Nicks would be guest starring. Murphy said they are just trying to figure out which song they will sing together.
American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesday at 10 pm on FX.
