Amber Portwood: ‘Teen Mom’ Gets An Early Release From Prison


Amber Portwood was released from prison nearly four years early. Officials with the Indiana Department of Corrections said the Teen Mom star was released at around 11 am EST. Officials said she was released early because she earned “good time credit” for her behavior and participation in a substance abuse program.

The reality star was originally sentenced to probation in lieu of prison time. However, she was later sentenced to five years in prison after violating the terms of her probation and court-ordered drug treatment.

As reported by E! Online, the 23-year-old was released after serving one year behind bars. She was seen leaving the prison this morning with her mother and brother.

Shawn Portwood said his sister has “grown and matured” during her prison stay/ He said she participated in a drug rehabilitation program, parenting classes, and obtained her G.E.D.

As reported by HollywoodLife, Amber Portwood lost custody of her 4-year-old daughter Leah due to her questionable lifestyle. She has vowed to work toward regaining custody.

Portwood made her reality television debut with her 2008 appearance in MTV’s 16 & Pregnant. Following the birth of her daughter Leah Leann Shirley, she appeared in the spinoff series titled Teen Mom.

Both series’ highlighted Portwood’s struggles with becoming pregnant as a teen and becoming a single mother. She dropped out of high school when she learned she was pregnant, vowing to get her G.E.D. The series’ also highlighted her violent relationship with Leah’s father Gary.

Portwood was eventually arrested for domestic violence after beating Gary bad enough to leave permanent scars. She was later convicted of drug possession.

The 23-year-old last appeared in Teen Moms during the 2012 season. She has spent the last year in prison, and had little contact with her daughter.

Amber Portwood has had a rough life, but she said she is dedicated to becoming a better person and a better mom.
