Cam Newton Doesn’t Want The Credit For Panthers Winning Streak

Cam Newton is at the top of his game, but the Carolina Panthers quarterback doesn’t want to take all the credit.

One night after leading the Panthers to a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and bringing the team over.500 for the first time since 2008, Newton deferred when asked why he was playing so well.

Instead, Newton said it was all because of his teammates.

“I feel as if my production is off a lot of people’s production as well,” Newton said. “If you want to solely say I’m playing great, it also means a lot of other guys are playing great. This is not a one-man show. I understand that, and I will not have that type of attitude.”

Newton’s numbers are undeniable, however. On Thursday night he threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another 50 yards with a rushing touchdown.

He has led the team on a three-game winning streak, throwing for 667 yards, hitting 58 of 74 passes with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also run the ball for 106 yards with another two touchdowns and no fumbles.

Newton’s ascension to the upper tier of quarterbacks — and a leader in the Panthers locker room — got a boost just before the season started, when coach Ron Rivera named Newton as one of the team’s captains.

“You’re holding yourself to a higher standard with being accountable,” Newton said. “I’m going about it each and every day and trying to make that happen.”

For many fans following the Panthers, Cam Newtown is stepping into the promise he showed in Week One of his rookie year, when he threw for more than 400 yards. Once labelled a potential bust during when his sophomore year did not match his torrid rookie season, Newton has now shown that be belongs among the elite NFL quarterbacks.
