Obama Feeds The Poor Bologna, And This Changes What?

President Obama fed the poor at Martha’s Table in Washington, D.C. as part of an effort to meet with the furloughed federal employees and help out serving the food. So the real question remains, what purpose did this serve?

In the middle of a government shutdown, in which Congress has ordered all unnecessary services to stop until they can reach a budget agreement, federal employees have been subject to a furlough, or a leave of absence. During this time, several federally funded parks have been closed down, leaving some business owners without the ability to pay their bills, as well as leaving tourists stranded in snow-packed areas like Yellowstone National Park. Still other closed facilities include the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., which led to veterans storming the National Mall twice already.

In the middle of all of this, what is our fearless President doing? Feeding bologna and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the poor. Obama isn’t going to win any awards or favors doing it, but on the other hand it shows he’s willing to stoop to a relatively useful level, strap on a green apron, and make a small difference in the lives of the needy.

Of course, as with all of his public appearances, President Obama had to unleash a speech on the masses about the government shutdown, even if they were mostly poor and needy and probably unable to make a difference themselves:

“This week if we don’t start making some real progress, both the House and the Senate and if Republicans aren’t willing to set aside their partisan concerns in order to do what’s right for the country, we stand a good chance of defaulting and defaulting could have a potentially have a devastating effect on our economy. … This whole shutdown has been completely unnecessary. This afternoon I am going to once again urge [Congress] to open the government and urge them to make sure that the United States government is paying its bills.”

Seriously, Obama? Is a speech to the poor and furloughed federal employees going to make any difference at all?

Apparently berating the Republicans in the government was worth a scene as President Obama fed bologna to the poor and furloughed federal employees alike.
