New Pee-Wee Herman Movie Gets A Director

It looks as though the new Pee-Wee Herman movie is still moving forward.

Although it’s been decades since star Paul Ruebens has put together a motion picture featuring the iconic character, apparently there’s still some interest in getting another movie off the ground. In fact, the actor says it’s only a matter of time before the project hits the big screen.

During a recent conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Ruebens said that a director is now in place for the new Pee-Wee Herman movie. However, the actor refused to drop any details about the filmmaker’s identity.

“Short of something unforeseen like the studio going out of business, I think it’s very likely both these projects will happen next year,” the actor told the publication.

According to Pee-Wee Herman himself, the script he co-wrote with I Love You Beth Cooper star Paul Rust is already finished. In fact, Ruebens said financing for the project is in the proverbial bag. It looks like there’s a very strong possibility that we could get another movie at some point in 2014.

While you’re waiting for the Judd Apatow-produced Pee-Wee Herman flick to hit theaters, fans of the actor can find him delivering a handful of lines in The Smurfs 2. However, don’t go into the picture expecting to hear his voice throughout the movie. The guy only has one or two lines in the entire feature.

“My theory is that it’s because of the times. Jokey Smurf in the cartoon would carry around a package that was a bomb. He’d give it other Smurfs as a present and then it would blow up. He’s a victim of the times,” Paul Ruebens explained.

The comedian can be found next in the Once Upon a Time spin-off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. The series is expected to premiere on October 13.
