‘Man Of Tai Chi’ Trailer Proves Keanu Reeves Knows Kung Fu [Video]

Keanu Reeves Director

A new action-packed Man of Tai Chi trailer has arrived online.

The martial arts flick marks the directorial debut of actor Keanu Reeves. The Matrix star has an affinity for kung fu movies, a fact which shines through in the latest trailer for the upcoming flick.

The story itself isn’t exactly original, but most people don’t sit down with martial arts movies for their inspired stories or ground-breaking plotlines. However, the film’s lack of originality doesn’t take away from what appears to be several impressive fight sequences.

Man of Tai Chi tells the story of a dedicated martial artist who enters the sleazy and dangerous world of underground tournament fighting. Matrix stuntman Tiger Hu Chen stars as the proverbial hero in the movie, while Keanu Reeves plays the unscrupulous organizer determined to make the man a killer.

Kung fu fans should be very familiar with the tournament formula powering Man of Tai Chi. The format has been used in countless movies, books, and even video games. It’s hard not to think about Mortal Kombat when Reeves is yelling “Finish him!” at one point during the trailer.

Reeves told The Guardian his love of the genre began with Bruce Lee. However, his appreciate for martial arts grew while filming the Wachowski’s sci-fi classic The Matrix. The film allowed the actor to work with both Tiger Chen and the legendary Yuen Woo Ping.

“It’s like play. There’s something childlike about it. They are fake fights — and that’s fun,” he explained.

Radius-TWC acquired the rights to Man of Tai Chi at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film, which is being distributed through Universal, is expected to arrive in select theaters this fall. A specific date has not been set as of this writing.
