Reese Witherspoon Wears Hat Supporting Atlanta Police Department After Arrest

Reese Witherspoon wore a hat emblazoned with the logo of the Atlanta Police Department this weekend, perhaps a form of apology after the actress and her husband were arrested there two weeks ago.

In the now-famous incident in April, Witherspoon’s husband Jim Toth was arrested for driving under the influence, and Reese herself got arrested for failing to heed the orders of police officers. Witherspoon refused to remain in her car, instead confronting the officer and even using the “do you know who I am” card.

An embarassing police report was later released giving more details. Officer J. Pyland wrote:

“I told Mrs. Witherspoon that Mr. Toth was under arrest. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to get back into the car. Mrs. Witherspoon stated that she was a ‘U.S. Citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.’ I put my hands on Mrs. Witherspoon’s arms to arrest her. Mrs. Witherspoon was resistant but I was able to put handcuffs on her without incident due to Mr. Toth calming her down.”

Reese Witherspoon would later go on Good Morning America and say she regretted the incident.

“I told them I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant … I have no idea what I was talking about,” Witherspoon said. “And I am so sorry. I was so disrespectful to him.”

“I know better,” she added. “It’s just unacceptable.”

It seems that Reese Witherspoon, by wearing the hat of the Atlanta Police Department, is either sincere in her apology or trying to score some publicity points. Judging by her squeaky-clean image to date it seems most people are betting on the former.

It seems backed up by the fact that this week Toth and Reese Witherspoon (with no hat for her court appearance) both pleaded guilty to the charges. She was fined $213 for the disorderly conduct charge while Toth was sentenced to community service and an alcohol education program for drunk driving.

Reese Witherspoon was spotted with the hat while she was leaving the Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday.

Of course Ms. Witherspoon has to do some damage control, but at least she didn't act like most of the other Hollywood brats. She raised her hand and took full responsibility for her actions. Very honorable indeed!
