Oceanside, CA – Four teenagers were shot at Libby Lake Park. California police officers are still searching for the shooters. The Oceanside park reportedly has a history of being a sight for gang violence.
Police officers were paged to Libby Lake Park on Calle Montecito after reports of gunfire were called in to Oceanside 911. The officers found the teenagers not long after entering the park around 9 pm. Three teen boys and one girl had all suffered gunshot wounds.
Paramedics pronounced two of the teenagers dead at the scene. The current condition of the remaining Libby Lake Park shooting victims is unknown. The teens were transported to a local hospital with serious gunshot wounds. The female shooting victim was reportedly an El Camino High School student.
An unconfirmed report from several family members indicates that one of the teenagers is in critical condition after being shot in the head twice. Witnesses to the Oceanside park shooting told police officers several teenage boys or young men dressed in dark clothing fled the scene. According to the witness statements, the males were driving a silver or gray Toyota pickup truck.
The Libby Lake Park shooting occurred near a memorial for two other young people who were killed in a gang attack two years ago. Fernando Solano, 16, and his girlfriend, Sandra Salgado, 14 were slain during the late evening hours on May 3, 2011.
Three gang members were charged with double-murder for the 2011 attack and are still awaiting trial. The accused 20-year-old shooter’s girlfriend told testified that the murders were a revenge attack. Several days prior to the earlier Libby Lake Park shooting, a member of the shooting suspect’s gang had been attacked.
Veteran police officer Leonard Cosby said that a lot of good people live in the Oceanside neighborhood but that the activities going on in the park scare him to death.
