Just how dumb is Al Davis anyways?

Posted: January 13, 2010

Sometimes it really amazes me how far people can self delude themselves. Sure at one time Al Davis was a football genius, sure at one time the Oakland Raiders were the model NFL Franchise, and they are still an elite franchise. However AL Davis’ time in this league is now at an end. Not because we want to see him gone, but because it is just time. Davis has just lost it, and his team suffers from poor decision making. Trust me I live in Detroit I have a PHD in poor football related decisions. This is not just bout him continuously hiring the wrong coach, but a litany of questionable calls that have set this team back for years to come.

I think at this point we can give Al a break on Lane Kiffin. Clearly this guy is a weasel, and I think Al had justifiable cause to fire him.  Had that been his only head coach hiring blunder we could let it go. However let us take a look at the men who have coached this team since they returned to Oakland; Tom Cable, Kiffin, Art Shell (the second time for our purposes), Norv Turner, Bill Callahan, Jon Gruden, Joe Bugel, and Mike White. That is not exactly a list of who’s who among NFL coaching greats.

Let us make this a little more simple, the fact that Cable has one of 32 NFL head coaching jobs is a total joke, and the fact that Davis’ sole criteria for a new head coach is keeping QB Jamarcus Russell in the mix is even more of a joke. Al the kid is no good, and it is time to move on. Worse than all that is the name that is being rumored for the Raiders head coaching job now, one Steve Mariucci.

Think about that for a moment. The last job Steve had with a rebuilding team, run by a guy that was questionable talent evaluator didn’t end up so well did it? I know, I live in Detroit and witnessed that nightmare first-hand. As bad NFL team the league over add men with Head Coaching experience to their staff’s Davis is nowhere to be found, and Cable keeps his job. Raiders fans should be outraged.

  1. I guess beating the broncos, The eagles, the bengals and the defending champs is a joke hh? With all those teams fighting for playoff spots. Your a joke. From 1975 to 2002 the raiders won 75% of those games. And I guess dumb people can win 3 super bowls too huh? I’d like o see how many you could win ha

You know, there was a time, back in the 1960′s, 70′s and into the early 80′s when words like “shrewd”, “savvy” and even “brilliant” were routinely found next to “Al Davis” in countless articles. I was around back then, and remember that well, even though I wasn’t a Raider fan.
Alas however, that was a long time ago, and those days are gone with the wind, never to return. Davis is starting to remind me of Leon Hess in his last days, another once-brilliant NFL owner who slowly lost it. Although I think Davis may even be stingier with his money than Hess was after the Namath era. Which reminds me, does anyone know if Rich Kotite is available if Cable is fired? He could be a dark horse.
