Sarah Palin Not Joining Al Jazeera: The Daily Currant Strikes Again

If there was ever a case of sweet revenge, this is it!. Last week, The Daily Currant ran a story that claimed Sarah Palin would be taking a new job as host and commentator for Al Jazeera America. While most professional journalists were wise enough to realize the source of the story was a parody website, one over-anxious reporter from The Washington Post, Suzi Parker, fell for the scam hook, line and sinker, and reported the fake news as fact.

Although The Washington Post later scrubbed the story from their website, the damage was done and Suzi Parker is now the butt of bad jokes by late night talk show hosts and stand up comics everywhere. The unfortunate Ms. Parker tried to salvage her reputation the way most liberals do when they get caught with their pants down; she made a vague statement blaming the mistake on The Daily Currant and replaced the original column with one that went on at great length to declare that Sarah Palin was a has-been media hound, desperate to cling to her 15 minutes of fame.

Sorry Suzi, but you got nailed. You ran an article with the smug title “Sarah Palin’s plan to reach ‘millions of devoutly religious people’ through Al-Jazeera” and you didn’t even bother to verify your source or double check the information. No amount of fudging the truth will ever hide the fact that you jumped the gun and leaped on the story with gusto. Your even used a quote from The Daily Currant to illustrate your article:

“As you all know, I’m not a big fan of newspapers, journalists, news anchors and the liberal media in general,” Palin told the Web site The Daily Currant. “But I met with the folks at Al-Jazeera and they told me they reach millions of devoutly religious people who don’t watch CBS or CNN. That tells me they don’t have a liberal bias.”

This entire sad spectacle is typical of the aggressive and often openly hostile attitude of modern journalists. All Ms. Parker needed to do was type “DailyCurrant.Com” in her browser’s address bar and she would have discovered the truth about the website. Instead, she thought she found the perfect opportunity to ridicule a politician she disliked and she missed the disclaimer:

“About | The Daily Currant

The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide – now including South Sudan.”

“Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence – which presses forward.”

“Q. Are your news stories real?”

“A. No. Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world”

The real clincher in this utterly stunning display of incompetence can be found in the titles of the articles on the front page of The Daily Currant website. Here is a small sample that will make it abundantly clear only a five-year-old child or someone with no concern for the truth could possibly imagine these stories have any basis in reality:

“Obama to Declare America A ‘Socialist State'”

“Catholic Church Considering Jerry Sandusky as Next Pope”

“Vladimir Putin Kills Grizzly Bear With Bare Hands”

“Glenn Beck Calls 911 After Accidentally Eating Halal Pizza”

“Sean Hannity Says Obama ‘Sabotaged’ Super Bowl”

Chad Sinclar, of The Daily Download, wrote the best comment on the whole affair and anyone who is concerned with the state of our Mainstream Media might want to read his words:

“One click. That’s all it would have taken for Suzi Parker, the author of this phony gem, to discover that the entire site is full of fake news.”

“Is this what The Washington Post has come to? Stooping so low that neither its reporters nor its editors can perform the most basic fact checking?”

“Parker and The Post made a second egregious mistake: They waited too long. The Currant story was published on February 4. The Post’s story? It published eight days later.”

“Now, if Sarah Palin was in fact joining Al Jazeera American, don’t you think more news outlets would have picked up on that? Perhaps MSNBC or her old chums at Fox News? Let’s be honest, it’s not as if The Post was sitting on the story for eight days to triple-check the facts.”

“The gross oversight in editing, the lazy reporting and the utter lack of common sense at The Post is astounding.”

As would be expected, Palin and her supporters are having a blast making fun of The Washington Post for their mistake:

And my personal favorite, a double jab at Al Gore:

Any fair minded person should be saddened by the level of mindless hate Democrats, Progressives and Liberals have visited upon Sarah Palin. What makes their behavior even more alarming is the number of women who are leading the charge to vilify Palin; a woman who broke through the barriers to become Alaska’s Governor and a Vice Presidential candidate. It is becoming more apparent with every passing day that Conservatives may be on to something when they say Liberals only believe in free speech when you agree with them.

While we are sure The Washington Post will survive this latest and quite hilarious debacle, it is a sad commentary on the decline of a newspaper that helped remove Richard Nixon from the Oval Office. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
