Cat Born Without Leg Bones Learns To Walk On His Elbows [Video]

Harvey the Cat

A cat that was born without bones in his legs has learned how to walks on his elbows thanks to the efforts of a UK-based animal charity.

The four-month old kitten named Harvey was born with a rare condition that prevented him from learning how to walk like other young cats. According to The Huffington Post, the kitten lacks the bones that connects the upper portion of his legs to his paws. The condition is called radial agenesis.

The charity said that Harvey was being sold by a cruel individual who put the kitten up for grabs on a site very similar to Craigslist. The cat was eventually purchased and turned over to the UK group Cats Protection. Harvey’s rehabilitation was soon underway.

Foster mom Liz McCulloch told The Sun:

“He’s a lovely little thing. Because Harvey was born that way he doesn’t know there’s anything wrong with him so he runs around on his elbows and happily plays with my other cat and dog.”

In order to correct the problem, the cat has learned to move around and play by using his elbows. The organization explained that Harvey will soon undergo surgery in order to replace the missing bones with metal pins.

McCulloch added that the operation is necessary in order to prevent the kitten from further damage. If the problem isn’t corrected while he’s young, then the cat would suffer spinal injuries later in life.

According to the Daily Mail, the website that featured Harvey’s listing has since apologized for allowing the inhumane individual to sell the cat.

A spokesperson for Gumtree said:

“We have a very strict policy regarding the sale of sick or injured animals on the website. We apologise that someone was able to post an advert for Harvey despite him having medical problems and we will do our best to make sure similar incidents do not occur in the future.”

Harvey is one fantastic and beautiful kitty. In this case, it's a good thing his previous owner was able to sell him so he could get some medical help. I hate to think what the owner would have done with him otherwise. I hope we get an update after he gets his legs fixed. GO HARVEY111

Long live Harvey! As for the cruel person trying to profit off of this little guy……may you prosper NOT in any of your future endeavors!

I am very glad they posted it and that someone that has a heart got him. He could have so easily ended up as a tortured animal by sick bast%%.

Some people have no heart or conscience – shame on you. The idiots who originally owned this beautiful creature could have turned it over to a rescue organization instead of selling it.

Good job to the person who purchased him and turned him over to the rescue group!

I have a cat just like that he is 5 yrs old now. Someone taped him up in a box and left him to die when he was a kitten. The shelter got him and I adopted him on his last day before being put to sleep. He is all love!

C'mon. It wasn't inhuman to sell the cat. When you consider how others treat unwanted pets.

I think Harvey walking on his elbows is just too adorable. I hope the surgery is a success and if he were my cat, I would love him just as much as I love my dog!

My daughter & her ten yr old son have a female cat, same defect to her front legs. She is adorable! Sits up on her hind paws and walks upright. Very independant and loving. I dndidn

Wow that's rather cruel of you Melissa. It's better that he sold the cat to someone that values it rather than neglecting it to die

Yes this is a great story and Harvey is (VERY) cool but it seems to me that he gets around very well and has a normal life. Being sold for profit is not that uncommon, pet stores do it everyday. If his owner didn't want him like alot of pet owner in the USA do and let me go out on a limb……like pet owners in the whole F%$#ing world want to sell there pet it is OK. Sorry if you have a fetish for cat and also have 20 of them…. Come back to the real world……I have a heart to but please in his eyes he thinks he is alright……
