After remaining quiet in the midst of the controversy surrounding his reality show, All My Babies’ Mamas, Shawty Lo is breaking his silence and firing back at critics who want the show canceled.
“You can hate all you want to, I didn’t ask for it. It just happened. Now that it happened, I’m supposed to turn my back against it,” the rapper said in an interview with MTV News. “If I wasn’t taking care of my kids then you would really dog me out, but I’m taking care of my kids, providing for my family. I don’t know what else to say.”
The Atlanta lyricist, whose real name is Carlos Walker, also said that out of the 10 women who have given birth to his 11 children, he only has a problem with one.
“She has two kids by me, and she feel like I’m supposed to do more for her kids, and she don’t wanna work, ” he said. “She just want me to straight take care of them, but it’s all love. I handle it…It’s a lot of fathers don’t take care of one; I gotta deal with 11.”
As we have previously reported, many were outraged by the show’s premise and, even though it is currently still in development, wanted Oxygen to cancel it before it even hit the air. Some believed the show was stereotypical and racist, but the network quickly defended the series, saying it wasn’t “meant to be a stereotypical representation of everyday life for any one demographic or cross section of society.”
The Change.org petition to cancel the series, which was at just over 15,000 signatures less than a week ago, has skyrocketed to 30,000 signatures.
For his part, Shawty Lo isn’t letting the criticism detract from the fact that he is taking care of his children the best way he can. He also sends a message to other fathers to be involved in their children’s lives.
“Even if you ain’t got the money, you gotta be a father to your child,” he said. “You need to be in your child’s life, ’cause that means a lot to them.”
