Derek Fisher DUI: Ex-Lakers Star Was Driving SUV Registered To Gloria Govan’s Ex, Report Claims

The latest news on the recent Derek Fisher DUI case suggests that the SUV driven, and ultimately wrecked by the former Los Angeles Lakers point guard was registered under the name of his girlfriend Gloria Govan’s ex-husband, Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes.

As reported by the Los Angeles Daily News, the 42-year-old Fisher was driving his 2015 Cadillac Escalade on the 101 Freeway early Sunday morning, with his girlfriend, former Basketball Wives L.A. star Gloria Govan, as the only passenger. As the SUV approached the 405 Freeway interchange, Fisher reportedly drove his Escalade across the paved right shoulder, causing it to overturn when it hit the guardrail. Both occupants were uninjured following the collision, but the California Highway Patrol would arrest Derek Fisher on suspicion of DUI — driving under the influence of alcohol — after confirming that he had been drinking.

Fisher, who had enjoyed an 18-year career as an NBA player, most prominently with the Los Angeles Lakers, was most recently involved in the league as the head coach of the New York Knicks, whom he helmed from 2014 to 2016.

With days having passed since the SUV collision, it would seem that Fisher may be in even deeper trouble, given TMZ’s revelation of whom the now-totaled Cadillac Escalade may have been registered to. The publication claims that the vehicle was registered to Matt Barnes, the 14-year NBA veteran who was married to Gloria Govan from 2013 to 2016. Barnes and Govan had two children together, and TMZ notes that Matt had allegedly given Gloria the Escalade as a gift “specifically for the kids.”

Basketball fans may be aware that the beef between Matt Barnes and Derek Fisher predates the latter’s DUI arrest by a couple of years. According to an October 2015 report from the New York Post, the 37-year-old Barnes had physically attacked Fisher in Los Angeles, having driven 95 miles to L.A. to “beat the s**t out of” the then-New York Knicks coach, after he had discovered Fisher and Govan were getting a little too close to each other for comfort.

At that time, Matt Barnes and Gloria Govan were still legally married, but separated from each other, so when Matt was supposedly informed by his twin sons that Derek was at home with the boys, he was “incensed” to the point that he drove to the house he once shared with Gloria to confront Fisher.

“Barnes went crazy. He got in his car and went to the house and went after Fisher.”

Interestingly, Barnes and Fisher were both teammates on the Lakers for two years, having played together for the team from 2010 to 2012. Barnes is now coming off the bench for the Golden State Warriors, who moved one game closer to winning the 2017 NBA Finals with a come-from-behind 118-113 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the fallout from Derek Fisher’s DUI arrest has continued, as he has kept silent on social media, while issuing a brief statement through his representative, thanking fans for their prayers and expressing gratitude that no one else was involved in the Sunday morning collision.

“On behalf of Derek Fisher and Gloria Govan, they would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

They are beyond grateful that they are both okay and that no one else was involved. Both Derek and Gloria are home and ask that you respect their privacy.”

As of this writing, Matt Barnes has yet to provide comment on TMZ‘s new details on the Derek Fisher DUI case, and how the vehicle involved was supposedly registered to his name. But the publication speculated that Barnes may “want Fisher to pay” to have the wrecked Cadillac Escalade replaced.
