Blake Shelton Reportedly ‘Refused’ To Propose To Gwen Stefani On ‘The Voice:’ What Went Wrong?

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani began their friendship on The Voice, with viewers initially speculating that something more than a friendship was forming behind those over-sized red coach chairs. Eventually, their friendly flirting turned into a confirmed rosy romance, with Blake and Gwen finally confessing that they were dating. Taking their relationship to the next level, rumors swirled that Shelton would propose to Stefani on The Voice this season.

Now a new report claims that although the country crooner was supposed to do just that, something went wrong, because the season finale of The Voice just aired without the hoped-for proposal. The finale also marked Gwen’s final appearance on the singing competition.

However, don’t blame what reportedly went wrong on producers of The Voice. If the execs had achieved what they reportedly wanted, fans would have seen the on-air proposal from a beaming Blake, with a glowing Gwen accepting an engagement ring, according to a May 25 update from Life & Style.

“If The Voice producers had gotten their way, Gwen Stefani would be rocking an engagement ring right now!”

So what did go wrong, and why didn’t the finale of The Voice feature a proposal? An insider told Life & Style that Shelton is to blame. Even though NBC executives reportedly “really wanted an on-screen proposal” from Blake, Shelton “refused” to go along with the plan.

Consequently, The Voice finale aired without even a hint of an engagement ring glittering on Stefani’s hand or hiding in Blake’s back pocket.

Shelton reportedly declined to propose to Gwen on The Voice not out of a desire to keep the actual proposal private or to arrange for a different, more romantic setting than blinding stage lights and a yelling crowd, but because of a relationship that was experiencing problems, according to the source.

“The high-profile couple’s relationship has hit a major rough patch.”

While Stefani appears to be smiling happily at her country crooner boyfriend in photos and on TV, the insider claims that Gwen’s and Blake’s jobs as flirting coaches on The Voice required them to do so. The lovebirds have been dating since 2015, but recently, the producers allegedly pushed the couple “to act very affectionate and playful with each other” even when they weren’t feeling like it.

While viewers saw the affection on the popular singing competition, behind the scenes Gwen and Blake allegedly were considering splitting. The insider was blunt about Stefani’s feelings when the cameras were turned off.

“Off-set, [Gwen is] miserable.”

The allegations that Stefani and Shelton staged an “affectionate” showmance for The Voice raise a question now that Gwen has left the show, however. What does the future hold for the supposed lovebirds, and did either of their fellow coaches (Adam Levine and Alicia Keys) suspect that anything was wrong?

As the Inquisitr reported, Alicia Keys recently shocked fans by suddenly announcing her own exit from The Voice, after hinting that Blake had “rigged” the votes and rumors of an alleged “brawl” with Gwen.

Rather than mourning Stefani’s departure, Shelton recently reacted to Keys’ exit from The Voice, reported UPI. The country crooner, 40, compared the situation to Harry Potter films, predicting that Keys would return.

“I’ve looked ahead. [The Voice] is like those Harry Potter movies. Characters you think are gone, then they come back.”

Consequently, Blake claimed that he had “looked ahead on the script” and saw Alicia returning to The Voice. But while Shelton was adamant that Keys would return, what about his girlfriend Gwen Stefani? He left it to Alicia to dish on Gwen.

“Gwen is coming back. We love Gwen,” gushed Keys.

And then Alicia dropped what seemed to be a hint that she’s aware of alleged relationship issues between Stefani and Shelton.

“Hopefully Gwen can replace [Blake].”

So is Stefani leaving The Voice to avoid having to fake a romance with Shelton? Not according to Radar Online‘s report, which claimed that Gwen was exiting the singing competition to avoid her “nemesis Miley Cyrus.”

At the time, executives reportedly were “scrambling to keep” Stefani on The Voice, according to the publication’s insider, who said that they wanted Cyrus and Stefani on at the same time.

“Producers would love nothing more than for both Gwen and Miley to be on the show at the same time because there would be so much drama.”

However, Stefani “simply does not want any part of it,” added the source. The insider also claimed that producers had offered “a considerable amount of money,” but that the bonus “really doesn’t matter.”

Now that the finale of the most recent season of The Voice has aired, what’s ahead for Gwen when it comes to her romance with Blake? On May 24, Life & Style reported that “the magic” is over when it comes to Stefani and Shelton.

The end of The Voice for Gwen reportedly means the end of having to fake a romance with Blake, according to the publication’s source, who claimed that Stefani had been “feeling the pressure to play Blake’s loving girlfriend [on the show]” and offered a prediction.

“It’s only a matter of time before Gwen and Blake announce a split.”

With the finale of The Voice completed, the insider predicted that the former lovebirds could split before the start of the summer, which is in mid-June.
