Felipe Massa’s left eye is 100%: Ferrari

Ferrari has announced that its star Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa has regained full use of his left eye, as part of his recovery from an horrific smash at the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this season.

The FIA, the peak body for Formula 1, conducted a series of neurological and ophthalmological examinations at the Pitié Salpetrière hospital in Paris, after which Ferrari released a statement giving the good news to the millions of fans who watched the Brazilian sustain serious head injuries in a 220kmh crash in practice in July.

“The first outcomes are positive: especially the ophthalmological exam confirmed that Felipe, who arrived with his personal doctor Dino Altmann, has recovered the functions of his left eye by 100%,” said the Ferrari statement.

The medical tests are due to continue today, with Massa attempting to rehabilitate himself sufficiently to be able to compete in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. He will step into a Ferrari car for the first time since the incident on Monday if further tests are positive, though he is unlikely to be ready until next season.
