HBO Reveals First Glimpse Game of Thrones Season 7

HBO has released our first glimpse into the final season of Game of Thrones.

This premiere video footage was released on December 4 and can be found in a promotional trailer for HBO titled “What’s Coming to HBO in 2017?” Game of Thrones has a release date set for summer 2017.

Head to the 1:02 minute mark to see 2 seconds of new, previously unreleased footage from Game of Thrones Season 7.

The show has attracted worldwide acclaim for its compelling story, diverse talent, and high production values. Although the Game of Thrones relevant footage in the HBO promo is only 2 seconds long, we can get some information about what the fate of a few of our favorite characters will be in the upcoming final season.

The promo features Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, and their younger sister Arya. All three appear to be alive and well, if sporting looks of consternation, suggesting that none of them died between the seasons. Jon and Sansa appear to be in the north, where the show last left them. Arya, interestingly, is riding a horse.

Jon Snow has had a rough time of it in the Game of Thrones universe, but is also a fan favorite and arguably the show’s main protagonist. He grew up believing he was the result of his father’s infidelity and carried this burden of dishonor throughout his childhood. However, whether Jon Snow was actually Ned Stark’s son was a hotly debated issue. The Season 6 finale finally confirmed a widely held fan-theory on Jon’s parentage.

Kit Harington, the actor who plays Jon Snow, had this to say about the series coming to an end.

“This mammoth, Goliath event in my life, which has so much of what my 20s are, is going to come to an end. I think I’m going to really make the effort in these next two years to enjoy every moment of it…”

Sansa Stark, played by 20 year old stunner Sophie Turner, is the next character shown in the teaser. She marches purposefully towards the camera in an icy landscape. The oldest Stark daughter has underwent dramatic, even traumatic character development to come into her own as a powerful player on the Game of Thrones. Sansa has had to transform from a petty princess to a righteous ruler in an effort to secure her family’s position in their home castle of Winterfell.

Turner hinted at a reunion between the characters in a red carpet interview.

“What overall excites me about this season is that main characters are coming together and it feels like things are ramping up. It’s really exciting and all feels like it’s coming to a big conclusion.”

The final shot in the promo is of Arya Stark and suggests some compelling information. The last time we saw Arya on a horse, she was galloping to another continent. Seeing Arya on a pony again and dressed in a heavy coat suggests she may have returned to Westeros. If so, she brings with her the training she learned from the Faceless Men across the sea.

Maisie Williams, who has the same devil-may-care attitude as her character, tweeted about the final season.

The final season of Game of Thrones has a lot to wrap up, with a a wide cast of characters scattered across the fictional world. The promo showed us three characters from House Stark, where the series began. Although not in the teaser, we can expect other fan favorites Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, and incestuous twins Cersei and Jaime to play large roles in the upcoming storyline. Season 7 is the final season of Game of Thrones.
