‘The Last Guardian’ Goes Gold: The Spiritual Successor To ‘Ico’ And ‘Shadow Of The Colossus’ Reportedly Complete [Video]

After almost a decade in development limbo, The Last Guardian has finally gone gold. That means the spiritual successor to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, and exclusive to the Playstation 4, has completed its development.

According to an article by IGN, it reports that Jun Yoshino, the Sony Interactive producer of The Last Guardian, just made it known that the game, which has been in development since 2007, is finally complete. He also indicated that the game will release exclusively for the Playstation 4 on December 6, just in time for the Holidays. There was some confusion however as less than an hour after Yoshino made it known The Last Guardian was complete on his Twitter account, the post was pulled. It is possible Jun Yoshino made an announcement he was not supposed to make. Nevertheless, it caused many gamers — especially those who have waited patiently with bated breath for almost a decade — to wonder what was going on.

Thankfully, we now know that The Last Guardian is still happening as Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony Worldwide Studios, has uploaded a post on his Twitter account confirming the game’s completion and upcoming release.

Now that The Last Guardian is officially complete and confirmed for a release in December, all gamers have to do is wait until they can pick up the title and play it seeing just how good (or bad) the title is. To be frank, many gamers were annoyed with the constant delays to The Last Guardian, but would rather experience them in hopes of the developers creating a worthwhile experience, over rushing it out resulting in a lackluster experience.

Besides that, The Last Guardian has a lot to live up to. As mentioned earlier, it is the spiritual successor to both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The first game, Ico, is about a boy who has horns growing out of his head. His physical condition is considered a bad omen in his village and he is locked away in a castle. While exploring the fortress, he meets Yorda, the daughter of the castle’s queen, who wants to use her body to expand her lifespan. Upon hearing this, both Ico and Yorda plan to work together to escape the castle.

Ico received strong reviews and heavy praise among cult gamers with near perfect scores across the board. However, it was panned for being a short story. Fortunately, the developer and publisher heard the criticisms of gamers and provided a brand new experience, one with an aesthetic presentation and unique gameplay, in Shadow of the Colossus. The game centers on Wander, who enters a forbidden land to slay 15 massive beings known as colossi to restore the life of a girl named Mono. Fighting the colossus is unique as it is more like solving a puzzle than fighting a boss creature. The experience is unique and all the details that make Shadow of the Colossus so unique resulted in a highly-praised and near perfect score game.

The developers, genDESIGN and SIE Japan Studio, combined all of what made Ico and Shadow of the Colossus such popular games into The Last Guardian. We will soon find out if the wait was worth it or if Sony has sadly dropped the ball. The Last Guardian will release in Japan, North America, and Europe on December 6. It will release in Australia one day later. Finally, it will release in the United Kingdom on December 9.
